Washington, D.C. – This week, the House Appropriations Committee approved Subcommittee Chairman Amodei’s FY27 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, delivering a hard-fought victory during one of the most pivotal and politically contentious periods in the Department’s history.
 
Rep. Mark Amodei has served on the House Appropriations Committee since the 114th Congress in 2015. After chairing the Legislative Branch Subcommittee during the 118th Congress, he assumed leadership of the Homeland Security Subcommittee in the 119th Congress. Taking the gavel amid the Biden Administration’s border crisis, Amodei has worked to strengthen border security and ensure the Department has the resources needed to support the current administration’s enforcement and homeland security priorities.

Fiscal Year 2027 Homeland Security Appropriations Act

The Homeland Security Appropriations Act provides a total discretionary allocation of $64.9 billion for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), of which $2.9 billion is provided for defense activities. The bill also includes $6.2 billion in discretionary appropriations that are offset by fee collections and $28.39 billion as an allocation adjustment for major disaster response and recovery activities.

The legislation includes the resources required to protect the homeland and keep American communities safe, secure, and resilient. The bill provides the necessary personnel, training, and technology to secure our air, land, and maritime borders and the nation’s critical infrastructure against nation-state adversaries.
The measure was approved by the Committee with a vote of 34 to 27.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Washington. From advancing the FY27 Homeland Security Appropriations bill out of subcommittee to securing funding for projects across CD-2 and sounding the alarm on California policies that continue to drive up costs for Nevadans, there’s plenty to cover. 
 
As always, representing our Original Nevada in Congress remains the honor of my lifetime. As I approach the finish line of my time in public service, rest assured I’m not slowing down. There’s still work to do, and I intend to go out sprinting. 
 
Without further ado, let’s get into the latest.

 
FY27 HOMELAND SECURITY APPROPRIATIONS BILL ADVANCES TO FULL COMMITTEE

 
Chairing the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations has undoubtedly come with its share of challenges over the past fiscal year. While the finger pointing may continue elsewhere, our focus has always been on finding practical solutions to the challenges before us. 
 
The bill we advanced to the full committee reflects that commitment through commonsense funding decisions that maintain strong border security, protect critical infrastructure and networks from persistent cyber threats, ensure communities have the resources they need when disasters strike, and build on our investments to the Coast Guard, whose presence and mission help keep our nation and our allies safe.
 
On our road to restoring regular order this time around, I hope we've learned that when this process is disrupted, it is the people we serve who bear the consequences.
 
Following the markup of the Labor, Health, and Human Services Appropriations bill, the full committee will take up my Homeland Security bill. The markup is expected to begin later today and continue into Wednesday. You can watch it live on the Appropriations Committee’s YouTube channel here.

Each year through the appropriations process, Members of Congress can submit Community Project Funding requests for their districts. Securing every priority in a single fiscal year is uncommon, which is why I’m especially pleased to announce that all 20 projects submitted by my office were approved, bringing more than $29 million to CD-2.
 
Beyond FY27 appropriations funding, I also worked directly with leaders in Washington to secure an additional $20 million for the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Terminal Modernization Project and $10 million for the Washoe County RTC to replace aging buses that have reached the end of their service life.

STUCK RIDING SHOTGUN ON CALIFORNIA’S ROAD TO DISASTER

 
Pressure at the pump is top of mind across the country amid Iran’s ongoing weaponization of the Strait of Hormuz. But even if that conflict were resolved tomorrow, Nevada would still face another engine of high prices: being handcuffed to California’s self-inflicted fuel crisis.
 
California’s climate crackdown is now pushing another major refinery, Valero’s Benicia facility, to shut its doors after agreeing to pay a $3.25 million penalty over alleged air quality violations. That comes on the heels of another major Los Angeles refinery, Phillips 66, announcing plans last year to close up shop.
 
Combined, those shutdowns are expected to cut the state’s gasoline refining capacity by roughly 17%. Lost refinery capacity cannot easily be replaced due to the West’s limited pipeline connectivity, which only exacerbates the situation.
 
Chevron is now threatening to leave the state, citing excessive overregulation that, rather than advancing clean energy, has deepened California’s reliance on imported fuel. When you factor in that these policies increasingly incentivize oil production abroad in countries with far lower environmental standards, the supposed climate benefits begin to defeat their own purpose.
 
Additionally, roughly 30% of the foreign crude oil California imports comes from the Middle East, a region directly impacted by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Energy Marketers of America, crude oil often accounts for as much as 70% of the price consumers pay at the pump. California’s restrictions on domestic production have therefore left the state, and Nevada by extension, increasingly dependent on foreign oil markets and more vulnerable to higher consumer prices.
 
Governor Newsom, and the Californians who haven’t already packed up and moved to neighboring states, may not feel the squeeze quite the same way thanks to electric vehicles. But out in rural Nevada, people don’t exactly have the luxury of hopping on a subway or plugging in at local charging stations.
 
According to Stillwater Associates, California supplies “88% of the Nevada gasoline market (including 100% of the Reno, NV market).” And while plenty of Californians are leaving the Golden State, many are landing right here in Nevada. That means demand is growing while supply capacity is shrinking, and you don’t need to be an economics wizard to see where this is headed.
 
Being entirely dependent on a state where Nevadans have no influence over the policies is killing us at the pump. That vulnerability was exposed during the devastating wildfires in California, and we are experiencing those disruptions once again.
 
I appreciate Governor Lombardo taking action by creating Nevada’s Fuel Resiliency Committee. This needs to be a priority now because while the problem is immediate, the solutions are not. Building infrastructure, expanding pipeline capacity, and securing alternative refinery access all require serious planning and time.
 
One option currently being evaluated is expanding HF Sinclair’s footprint in both southern and northern Nevada. According to last year’s announcement, “The first phase would increase capacity by a projected 35,000 barrels per day to move supply from our Rockies production into Nevada and is targeted to be online in 2028.”
 
While this is a step in the right direction and the wheels are finally beginning to turn, we need to put the pedal to the metal. We need to aggressively pursue every viable short-term and long-term solution because Nevadans shouldn’t be forced to pay the price for California’s half-baked energy policies.

Project Description: This project will support the replacement of aging, end-of-life equipment with modern radios, repeaters, and supporting infrastructure; upgrades to backhaul from legacy copper lines to fiber; and the addition of redundancy, including backup power, diverse routing, and alternate sites, to ensure reliable, interoperable communications for first responders. 
 
Recipient: Carson City Sheriff’s Office 
Amount: $1,085,000
Project Description: This project will support the purchase of a multi-agency, multi-discipline response vehicle to replace the current apparatus and provide improved functionality, mobility, technology, and reliability for critical incidents and major events. 
 
Recipient: City of Sparks 
Amount: $2,500,000
Project Description: This project will support the purchase of seven drones for a Drone as a First Responder program, investigative and forensic crime analysis software, gunshot detection expansion, additional live cameras and license plate readers, and modernization of a regional mobile command center. 
 
Recipient: University of Nevada, Reno 
Amount: $2,963,000
Project Description: This project will support the deployment of 15 meteorological stations with real-time data visualization and community outreach to improve flood, fire, and water supply forecasting, including enhanced data to support water planning. 
 
 
Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies:
Recipient: Lander County 
Amount:$2,160,000 
Project Description: This project will support the construction of a sanitary sewer lift station and associated mainline extension along Sheep Creek Road in Battle Mountain, Nevada, represents a critical investment in public health, environmental protection, and community growth. The project will reduce septic system density, preserve vital groundwater resources, and provide the infrastructure necessary to support sustainable development identified in the Lander County Master Plan. 
 
Recipient: City of Yerington 
Amount: $1,500,000 
Project Description: This project will support the Critical Drinking Water Rehabilitation and Improvement Project, which addresses urgent deficiencies in the City of Yerington’s municipal water storage system. Five water tanks require rehabilitation to maintain compliance with drinking water standards after the 2023 Nevada Department of Environmental Protection Sanitary Survey identified significant deficiencies, including corrosion and rust confirmed by a follow-up engineering assessment. 
 
Recipient: Storey County 
Amount: $1,500,000 
Project Description: This project will support the Silver City Watermain Replacement Project, which will replace the approximate 8,500-linear-foot (1.6 miles) of a nearly 150-year-old transmission main, stretching from State Route 342 to an existing County water storage tank. The proposed transmission main will traverse along the terrain, parallel to the existing main’s original alignment. The original line was installed in the 1870s and is in dire need of replacement to deliver safe drinking water to Virginia City. 
 
Recipient: City of Fernley 
Amount: $1,000,000 
Project Description: This project will support the Highway 50 Looping Water Mainline project, which will extend a water main along US 50A from Nevada Pacific Boulevard to Julia Lane. The project provides essential redundancy, fire-flow reliability, and hydraulic stability in a high-growth, high-traffic regional corridor and will provide a reliable drinking water source for the community surrounding Farm District Road. 
 
Recipient: Lyon County 
Amount: $1,000,000 
Project Description: This project will support the South Plant Effluent Pumping Improvements project. The existing effluent pumping surrounding the current pump station and other disposal sites near the South Plant needs standby effluent pump and upsizing the force main under the Carson River in order to maximize the effluent delivery to the reuse sites. The current system deficiencies limit the effluent disposal capacity of the utility impacting the overall wastewater management in the utility’s service area. 
 
Recipient: Kingsbury General Improvement District 
Amount: $1,000,000 
Project Description: This project will support the modernization of the Kingsbury General Improvement District’s existing wastewater infrastructure serving the Stateline community. The project will construct new sewer conveyance infrastructure redirecting wastewater flows from the aging Market Street Lift Station to the Douglas County Lake Tahoe Sewer Authority Beach Lift Station, eliminating aging lift station infrastructure and removing asbestos cement force main that feeds into Edgewood Creek. 
 
Recipient: City of Carlin 
Amount: $1,000,000 
Project Description: This project will support the replacement of the aged Oak Street Sewer Lift Station that has gone beyond its economic useful life that serves 2,519 citizens of Carlin, which is a rural small town located in northern Nevada. This funding request is vital for the City of Carlin in order to keep the existing system operating for its citizens. 
 
Recipient: City of Fallon 
Amount: $1,000,000 
Project Description: This project will support the construction of a 3,000,000-gallon municipal water storage tank for the City of Fallon to improve reliability and resilience of the community’s municipal water system. A new water tank is necessary to improve drinking water storage capacity in the community water system, increase fire flows, fulfill the needs of a growing community, and give the ability to provide storage redundancy for the Fallon Naval Air Station in the event of an emergency. 
 
Recipient: City of Yerington 
Amount: $500,000 
Project Description: This project will support the Critical Wastewater Rehabilitation and Improvement Project, which addresses urgent deficiencies in the City of Yerington’s wastewater treatment system identified by the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP). Recent inspections determined that the City’s sewer pond liners are in unsatisfactory condition and that failing equipment within the collection system is causing inadequate conveyance of raw sewage to the treatment ponds. These failures have resulted in raw sewage backups in a residential neighborhood and insufficient odor mitigation, creating significant public health, environmental, and quality-of-life concerns. 
 
Recipient: Lyon County 
Amount: $1,000,000 
Project Description: This project will support the rehabilitation of Sewer Station 4 Lift Station in Lyon County. Sewer Lift Station 4, located at 490 Dayton Valley Road, Dayton, NV has reached its end of life and needs rehabilitation to extend the life of the lift station and ensure continued operation in the sewer collection system. The Lift Station also needs to be equipped and upgraded with proper instrumentation and control facilities to function efficiently. 
 
 
Transportation, Housing and Urban Development:
Recipient: Washoe County Sheriff’s Office
Amount: $3,000,000
Project Description: This project will support a roof retrofit, hangar door replacement, and upgrades to fire suppression systems and concrete infrastructure for the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. 
 
Recipient: Carson City 
Amount: $1,000,000
Project Description: This project will support the completion of the interior and exterior ADA-related improvements of the Carson City Community Center. The funds will be used to implement critical infrastructure and add system upgrades to improve safety and accessibility. 
 
Recipient: Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority 
Amount: $2,344,000
Project Description: This project will support the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority to acquire modern snow removal equipment for the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The funds will be used to replace two runway brooms and two snowplows, three that were purchased in the late 1990s and one purchased in 2006, with two multifunction units. One multifunction unit replaces both a broom and a plow. These new units are more efficient and will improve the ability to keep the airport operational in the face of major winter weather. 
 
Recipient: City of Fernley 
Amount: $1,000,000
Project Description: This project will support the City of Fernley’s Gustafson Road and Bridge Replacement Project. The funds will be used to replace a failing, weight-restricted bridge over the Truckee-Carson Canal, which will be able to service heavy vehicles such as emergency fire and rescue trucks. 
 
Recipient: Town of Gardnerville 
Amount: $750,000
Project Description: This request will support the town of Gardnerville’s Service Drive, Pep Circle, and Venture Drive Reconstruction and ADA Upgrades Project. The funds will be used to fund the reconstruction of three worn-down and damaged roads. 
 
Recipient: Humboldt County School District
Amount: $1,000,000
Project Description: This project will support the Winnemucca Grammar School, a 100-year-old historic elementary school. The Humboldt County School District closed the building in February 2026 after engineering evaluations identified structural deficiencies that pose a significant safety risk, and the district has had to temporarily send 300 students to an elementary school ten miles outside of town. The funds will be used to fix structural deficiencies that pose safety risks and allow the school district to serve the student population within the community.

In addition to the FY27 appropriations funding, I successfully secured support for two other community initiatives: 
 
Recipient: Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Terminal Modernization Project
Project Description: Through conversations with my former House colleague and current Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, I emphasized the importance of this terminal modernization project. This $20 million investment will replace aging concourses with modern, efficient facilities that address capacity constraints driven by rapid population growth and increased passenger demand. The finished project will leave the community with a family-friendly airport, full of space to enjoy the surrounding views, including post-security outdoor space to get fresh air and enjoy the beautiful weather of our region. By investing in this key entry point, we are effectively investing in the economic vitality of the entire Nevada business and tourism ecosystem. 
 
Recipient: RTC of Washoe County
I had previously helped secure nearly $10 million for Washoe RTC to buy hydrogen fuel cell electric buses to replace aging diesel buses and install fueling infrastructure and create a workforce development program. After several holdups with the Department of Transportation, I worked directly with Transportation Secretary Duffy to have these funds delivered to Washoe RTC. The Homeland Security bill was separated from the other 11 appropriations bills last fall at the request of Democrats, who raised concerns about deportation and border operations. In hindsight, that decision made an already difficult process even harder. It was a mistake not to handle it along with the other 11 bills like Defense, Agriculture, Interior, and others. Since that time, the fundamental disagreement over this administration’s policy on the border and immigration has created partisan gridlock. It has been, so far, impossible to come up with something that strikes any kind of fact-based balance.

The situation was further complicated by the shootings in the Twin Cities in January, and since then both sides have traded talking point political barbs, with no real process taking shape. The House has passed, three times, the original funding bill that was agreed upon in a bicameral, bipartisan fashion, that bill has been largely ignored.

Last Friday, at three in the morning, with only a handful of people on the floor, the Senate used a procedure called unanimous consent, where the person in the chair relied on a voice vote to move forward a bill that excluded funding for ICE and Border Patrol. They immediately sent that to the House and left town.
To be clear, this bill is not the same bill that was proposed by Rep. Rosa DeLauro, but since truth has very little to do with a lot of what people say around here, Democrats are claiming some sort of victory with this
Senate jam bill.

What you have here is no changes in immigration policy, for which TSA, FEMA, USCG, Secret Service, and CISA have allegedly been shut down for a record 48 days. Nothing has changed in a policy sense for ICE and Border Patrol and Border Patrol operations. They continue to be fully funded as a result of last year’s reconciliation bill. If you’re confused, you should be.

So, we’re back to where we started. Last Friday night, the House passed a bill to fully fund Department of Homeland Security for two months. It’s my hope that we can recognize that what we’ve been doing isn’t working.

I feel an obligation to apologize on behalf of the entire Congress. This has certainly not been anything resembling responsible focus on policies or problem solving. The collateral damage to federal employees was apparently just for sport because nobody has any trophy out of this other than thumping their chest on TV and misleading people.

However, one thing that has not wavered is that I, along with my colleagues in the House, voted four times to fully fund Homeland Security operations globally, support the efforts of this administration, and pay all our federal employees.

I hope you’ve all had a strong start to the new year and are staying consistent with the goals you set on January 1. The beginning of this year has delivered plenty of new developments, and maybe even a few surprises. So, in the interest of saving you time, let’s dive right in.

 MILITARY OPERATIONS IN IRAN
 
For 47 years, the Iranian regime has sown seeds of terror and destruction against the West and our values, while viciously oppressing its own people. With every passing day that we fail to confront this radical regime and its proxy groups, they move one step closer to their goal of destabilizing the free world. As a leader of the free world, we have a responsibility not only to say that Iran cannot be nuclear-armed, but to promise that it never will be.
 
The time has come to make it clear that radical regimes seeking to undermine democracy, while enthusiastically chanting “Death to America”, will be met with the strength of America and its allies.

ONGOING DHS SHUTDOWN
 
On January 22, the House passed the FY26 Homeland Security bill which was reached through bipartisan, bicameral negotiations. While the shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good are tragic, the investigations are ongoing and we will see what they produce. Shutting down DHS makes less than no sense when there are measures already in place to investigate any potential wrongdoings.

 At a time of heightened unrest around the world, using policy disputes to shut down our own departments is beyond irresponsible, and the consequences could be serious. Now is the time for Congress to get off its hands and fully fund the agencies that protect our people.


THE STATE OF THE UNION IS STRONG
 
While we all know you should never say mission accomplished, the mission is going well.
What missions are you talking about you might inquire? The ongoing work by Congress and this Administration to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pockets.
 
Tax season is here, and this year you will see direct benefits from the Working Families Tax Cuts we passed last year. The average tax cut per filer is $3,750. According to the IRS, Americans are receiving an average refund of $4,000, an 11% increase.
 
With childcare costs still described as untenable and often exceeding housing payments, we delivered real relief by expanding the Child Tax Credit to $2,200 and making it permanent.
 
Purchased an American-made vehicle? You may qualify for up to a $10,000 tax credit. And not to mention No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, and No Tax on Social Security.
 
At the grocery store, staples like eggs, cheese, milk, butter, and fresh fruits and vegetables are in far better shape than they were a year ago. We’re not ignoring the fact that there’s still work to be done on other items like coffee and beef.
 
So, how’s that gas mission looking? Whether you are driving to school, to work, or anywhere in between, and while we still have not fully solved the issue of being trapped by California refinery warfare, the average price in Nevada is a lot better than it was this time last year. In fact, drivers across the country are now paying less than three dollars a gallon for regular gas on average.
 
Housing supply and healthcare costs remain major challenges, but there is no doubt that the focus is squarely on those issues. We look forward to continuing the work to provide relief for all Americans, including the folks right here in Nevada. While we have made real progress for working families, we will continue to keep an eye on issues and solutions that directly address affordability challenges.

EVERYTHING THAT GETS UBER POLITICIZED GETS DESTROYED


The Supreme Court dealt a blow to one of President Trump’s top priorities: tariffs. There’s no question we as a nation have been taken advantage of by unfair trade policies for years. One fact that is too often overlooked is that we are running the largest trade deficit in history. The goal of correcting that imbalance is something we should all be able to agree on. We want American industries, farmers, and businesses to compete and thrive. And that requires leveling the playing field.
 
Here in Nevada, our sheep producers are being pushed to the brink of extinction because trade conditions have allowed Australia to dominate the global sheep meat market, accounting for over 50% of total world exports as of 2023-2024. In 2024 alone, the U.S. imported over 309 million pounds of lamb which is a nearly 30% increase from the prior year. As a result, over 70% of lamb consumed in the U.S. now comes from foreign sources, while domestic production has dropped by over 60% since its peak in the 1990s.
 
I introduced a bill, which gives a voice to the concerns of our local producers, to impose a 30% tariff on lamb and sheep products from Australia and New Zealand, and we’re hopeful that consideration and awareness of this issue will give our folks a fighting shot.
 
While the President’s first play didn’t reach the end zone, that doesn’t mean the playbook is empty. His administration remains committed to pursuing negotiations with foreign leaders to secure equitable trade agreements. At the end of the day, it is not only risky for our economy to depend so heavily on imported goods, but also dangerous to build long-term reliance on products we are fully capable of producing ourselves.

Before you ask, no, I’m not terminal, and I can still run across the street to avoid getting run over. After 15 strong years representing CD-2, I thought it was the right time to pass the torch. We’ll see what the field looks like once the filing deadline passes, and I look forward to supporting the person who’s best qualified for the job.
 
It’s truly been the honor of my lifetime to represent you and the place I call home, but I still have work to finish before hanging up the cleats.

“Under the leadership of Chuck Schumer, progressive Democrats are now demanding that Congress weaken interior immigration enforcement or risk shutting down the entire Department of Homeland Security,” said Chairman Mark Amodei.

“If you think that’s acceptable because you oppose ICE or Border Patrol operations, it’s worth remembering that DHS funds far more than immigration enforcement. Threatening to shut it down puts core national security functions at risk.

“The Coast Guard, which carries out critical maritime search-and-rescue missions, would be sidelined. FEMA’s emergency preparedness and disaster recovery efforts would be delayed and disrupted, even as states across the country are still dealing with historic winter weather. At a time of heightened global tensions, DHS cybersecurity and communications capabilities would shift from proactive to reactive defense. During the last shutdown, Americans saw firsthand what happens when TSA operations are disrupted: longer wait times, widespread flight cancellations, and unnecessary chaos. Some lawmakers are apparently willing to see that happen again. 

“None of these consequences have anything to do with immigration enforcement.

“While I’ve previously said ICE needs to refocus on its core mission, that pivot is already underway. Under Tom Homan’s leadership, tensions in Minnesota were successfully deescalated through engagement with local officials, leading to the conclusion of surge operations in the state and the deployment of body cameras for personnel remaining on the ground.

“It’s also important to note that ICE still has resources funded in the One Big Beautiful Bill if the third shutdown in less than 100 days takes place. At the same time, a continuing resolution does little to resolve the issue, as it keeps funding at FY25 levels, which are actually higher than what’s proposed for FY26.
“Policy disagreements are not the responsibility of the appropriations process; rather, they should be taken up with the authorizing committees. I urge my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to reflect on the lessons of the longest government shutdown in history, which proved it accomplishes nothing.”

appropriations for the continued development and expansion of the ShakeAlert West Coast earthquake early warning system, with language specifically directing the United States Geological Survey to initiate the expansion of the program into Nevada. 
 
This funding was secured in H.R. 6938, the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water 
Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026, which was signed 
into law by the President on January 23, 2026. 
 
“While neighboring states already have the tools and technology to warn residents of 
potential earthquakes, Nevada has lagged behind,” said Rep. Mark Amodei. “This funding will equip our state’s experts with the resources they need to implement a proven system 
that keeps Nevadans safe and communities prepared for seismic activity. I appreciate the 
University of Nevada for its leadership and advocacy on this issue, and it was an honor to

Program. “Possibilities could include the populated areas across high-risk regions of 
Nevada, Alaska, Utah, the New Madrid Seismic Zone, the Puerto Rico region, and 
elsewhere. Development of a technical implementation plan would be the first step in a 
multi-step process for ShakeAlert rollout to parts of Nevada."
 
Background
ShakeAlert works by detecting the fastest seismic waves close to an earthquake as soon as it starts. Computer algorithms compare the signals from several seismic stations and 
confirm that a large earthquake has occurred and trigger an alert. For areas farther away 
from the source of the earthquake, the alert arrives via cell phones and WEA Alerts before 
damaging seismic waves reach that location. 
 
The precious seconds of warning allow people to Drop, Cover and Hold to protect 
themselves, and allow trains, water supply systems, emergency services, manufacturing, 
schools, and health care facilities to put emergency measures in place or stop delicate

"A pivot to ICE’s core mission in Minnesota is needed. Prioritizing the most dangerous criminal aliens and focusing enforcement on individuals who have gone through due process and have final orders of removal is the stated core mission. Over the past 60 days, we’ve been compiling data to better understand the internal culture and operational decisions that existed prior to the recent fatal shootings in Minneapolis.

The fact that Tom Homan, along with CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott and former Deputy CBP Commissioner and Acting ICE Director Ron Vitiello, have been sent to assess the situation is an encouraging indicator that a pivot is happening; led by career law enforcement professionals, who have served under both Republican and Democratic Administrations. Those are the people who are now in charge in Minnesota. Additionally, Governor Walz talking on the phone with the President to coordinate efforts is another step in the right direction. What we’ve seen in the last 72 hours looks completely different from before, and that shift must continue. I look forward to the shooting investigation results in both instances in a timely manner.
That said, there is another player in the room who has not been exemplary, and that is the local agitators and politicians who have encouraged the continued interference with immigration enforcement operations. They share equal responsibility for creating a warzone mentality on the ground. State, local, and federal agencies must unify their efforts, leveraging their distinct authorities and resources to restore safety and order in Minnesota.

For those calling to shut down the Department of Homeland Security under the belief that it would be wise for the nation, I beg to differ. It is beyond reckless to shut down FEMA during unprecedented winter weather events that affect approximately 30 states. Sidelining the Secret Service, impeding Coast Guard operations, disrupting TSA during an already strained travel environment, and weakening CISA, who is responsible for critical cyber security protection, would defy logic and public safety.

The loss of any American life is tragic, and my thoughts are with the loved ones of both Ms. Good and Mr. Pretti. As the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman, I expect thorough and transparent investigations into what went wrong and immediate actions to ensure something like this never happens again.
